Meet our team

Rory O’Connor, CIM
Senior Vice President & Portfolio Manager

With over 16 years of experience in the investment industry, Rory focuses on managing client portfolios, identifying and assessing suitable investment strategies and solutions, as well as implementing the team's strategic and tactical asset allocation views. As a portfolio manager, Rory shares the portfolio management responsibilities with Tim. Rory believes that investment success is as much about people as it is about numbers. There is a delicate balancing act that must be struck between analytics (the numbers) and understanding "POP” – People, Ownership Structure, and Process. Rory also leads our activities as they relate to tax and estate planning. Given his significant experience within this space, he serves as the key liaison (somewhat of an interpreter at times) between our clients and their key tax and legal professionals. Rory also leads our thorough tax reporting activities throughout the year, in an effort to make our clients’ annual tax filing experience as seamless as possible.

Rory began his career in the wealth management industry with Merrill Lynch in 1999, and through various consolidations and acquisitions within the industry he has also worked at CIBC Wood Gundy and Macquarie Private Wealth. Having gained valuable experience at a number of different institutions, he very much values the independence and open architecture platform that Richardson GMP provides.

Rory completed his undergraduate studies at Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA while on an academic and athletic scholarship as a NCAA field lacrosse player. Rory was awarded the distinction of Delta Mu Delta from the National Honors Society for academic achievement in Business Administration and was also a member of the Dean’s List in all four years of his undergraduate studies. He has his Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation and has completed the Advanced Derivatives Training and Level 1 for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is also proud to be a member of the Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA). Born in Prince George, BC, Rory moved to Vancouver at the age of 3, and has called Vancouver home ever since. Rory is happily married with two young daughters. In his spare time, Rory takes full advantage of all that the west coast has to offer. Splitting time between Whistler and his home in North Vancouver, he is an avid mountain biker and, once the snow starts to fall, is quick to switch to downhill skiing.

Tim Engelbert, CIM®
Senior Vice President & Portfolio Manager

Tim brings 15 years of global investment experience, a high degree of technical expertise, and in-depth analytical skills to our practice. As a portfolio manager, Tim shares the portfolio management responsibilities with Rory. With an ongoing focus on risk management, Tim handles our research inflows and analytics and helps build and manage client portfolios. He is responsible for the implementation of our team’s tactical asset allocation and tax-conscious strategies. Tim also leads our client portfolio performance review and reporting process. In addition, he also champions our team’s analytics relating to alternative asset classes.

A Vancouverite by birth, Tim spent seven years working in financial services in London, England and before that in the United States.  While in a senior role within Citigroup’s equity derivative business, Tim built technical skills across a wide range of financial products. In addition to managing a complex book of financial instruments, he also priced, executed and was a market maker for Citigroup’s European derivative franchise. His technical insight is built on a solid foundation of risk management and an ability to work efficiently under pressure. Prior to Citigroup, Tim worked in Risk Management at ING Barings in London and for Wells Fargo Bank in the U.S. where he supported a team working with high net worth individuals, corporations and institutional money managers.

Tim studied Mathematics and Economics at the University of Victoria. On a personal note, Tim is happily married, and has one daughter. When not chasing after his young daughter, Tim enjoys the outdoors and a wide range of sports including golf, skiing and mountain biking.
